It is the first-time competition for a licence has been opened up after the council rejected calls to ringfence the permits for family members.

The number of jarvey licences in Killarney town is limited to 37 due to traffic levels and all operators of jaunting cars are required to hold a licence under bylaws.

The council says there is one licence available and if the number of expressions of interest exceeds this the allocation shall be determined by lot.

The closing date for applications is Friday December 16th.
