All Irish Music Show

Horizons’ is a Religious and Social Affairs programme with a difference. Broadcast every Sunday morning on Radio Kerry from 9.00 – 10.00 ‘Horizons’ communicates the Christian message in the context of contemporary Irish society. It does so in a manner that is ecumenical rather than partisan, informative rather than dogmatic.

As well as supporting people in their Christian Faith, it reaches out to the growing number of people who have become distanced from their Church for whatever reason, and to those with a keen interest in the spiritual. At the same time it appeals to those with an interest in the moral fabric of society, while holding no great desire to become active members of any particular Church.

While fulfilling these needs it also informs people about events as they unfold and provide a rich source of entertainment. This ensures that the programme avoids being ghettoised and remains instead an integral part of Radio Kerry’s schedule and the community it seeks to serve.

Classical Delights

Sundays are special on Radio Kerry … a time for repose, relaxation, tranquillity and a little bit of self-indulgence.

Every Sunday morning from 7 until 9am, Ted Carroll whisks us away on a musical journey, suggesting pieces of music that make a good starting point for exploring the world of classical music and, uncovering along the way, a treasure trove of musical delights.

Drawing on his expansive personal collection, Ted aims to stretch our musical horizons and heighten the enjoyment to be had from classical music and song with a diverse selection from the great composers and performers right through to modern maestros.

Some pieces you might recognize, others might be new to you. In any case you’ll have the opportunity to hear lots of different types of classical music and song in every programme, so you should be able to find something that appeals.

Now approaching his 23rd year on the air, Ted continues to paint a multi-coloured tapestry of music to accompany the dawn breaking every Sunday.  From Strauss to Mozart; Richard Tauber to Josh Groban; glorious symphonies to playful pizzicati; movie scores to luscious, chilled-out ambient sounds, Classical Delights is the only place to rest your dial!

The following is outline of the programme on a four week cycle:

on the topics of the day … on a four month cycle that covers
the four mayors of Kerry, the three north Kerry TDs, the south
Kerry TDs and the three Munster MEPs – all in studio
  • The second Saturday is on the life and times or issues centred
around one person … one person in studio and a great number of others
    on the telephone
  • On the third Saturday the theme is ‘self help’ – a community, a
voluntary group, a business etc etc … speaking about things they have
    done to help themselves.
  • The last Saturday of the month Frank Lewis goes for a walk.  This could be
around a town … in a garden … along a stretch of coastline or along a range of mountains.  Frank picks eight stopping points and records a 10 minute piece at each stop with four people from different disciplines

The focus is on telling stories.  It could be a geologist, botanist, zoologist, historian or a folklorist doing the talking!  The programme could include music, song or poetry connected to the place or the theme of the programme.
