Seanad told how elderly Kerryman takes shotgun to bed because of burglary fear

The Seanad has heard how an elderly  Kerryman is so afraid of being burgled that he takes a shotgun to bed with him every night. Labour party senator Marie Moloney Senator Marie Moloney said she spoke to the 69-year-old man whose experience, she said, reflects the genuine fears of people, particularly older people. Labour Senator Marie Moloney  said that one could almost taste the fear in people when they spoke of crime. The Kilcummin politician asked that the Government provide grant aid towards installing security alarms. However, Junior Minister Jimmy Deenihan, speaking on behalf of the Minister for Justice, said Minister Frances Fitzgerald is of the view that such a grant scheme would not be the best use of resources. He said Minister Fitzgerald had announced a doubling in funding for the community alert and Crimestoppers schemes. Senator Moloney  told the Seanad that she met an elderly North Kerryman  who told her of his fears of being burgled. [audio_player src=””]
