A monstrosity and blight on the landscape – that is how one councillor has described the storage depot at Dooneen, Gleansharoon in Castleisland. Cllr Bobby O’Connell says he doesn’t think this storage facility would be tolerated at Ladies View or the Gap of Dunloe and shouldn’t be tolerated at the entrance to the county either. Cllr O’Connell says the grit and salt storage depot located in the Killarney Municipal District services the Tralee area. Kerry County Council says the depot is strategically positioned for salt storage for winter maintenance and to relocate it would require land acquisition and the construction of a new compound. Killarney Municipal District Manager Angela McAllen said the depot has been in Gleansharoon for 50 years. She told the December meeting of Killarney Municipal District that the matter was also raised by Castleisland Chamber Alliance, that concerns would be taken on board and an update will be provided at the next meeting of Killarney Muncipal District.
