Ross Island lays claim to oldest copper mine in Ireland

An expert on mining is claiming that the oldest copper mine in Ireland and Britain was located in Ross Island in Killarney. It`s now been proven that there was mining and a mine village in Killarney in the Neolithic period which dates back 4,500 years ago. Dr Billy O Brien will give a talk outlining mining in Killarney tonight chronicling the activity of mines on Ross Island from the early Christian period to the 19th century.
