Rathmore Social Action Group honoured with Civic Reception

Rathmore Social Action Group which was set up in 1975  by secondary school teacher Jerh O’Donoghue has been honoured with a civic reception by Killarney Municipal District. Rathmore Social Action In 1982 the group decided to build it’s own headquarters, funds were raised and Teach Iosagain, was opened in 1983. Teach Iosagain included a Disco Hall and Laundry room; with the Laundry, the Social Action Group began it’s Care of Older Adults’ programme. In 1992 the group decided to build a larger Day Care Centre and seven sheltered houses for older people. The project was completed in 1993 and over 20 people began attending. More recently it has taken ownership of Rathmore Presentation Convent with a €1.4 million project in place. The plans include converting the convent and the neighbouring old national school into apartments and four 2 bed houses for older people in the community.
