Rare bird spotted in Ballyduff

Franklins Gull A rare bird – who should be wintering in South America – has been spotted in Ballyduff’s Cashen Estuary. This is only the second documented sighting of ‘Franklin’s Gull’ in Kerry – the last sighting was in Ballyheigue in May 1993. Franklin’s Gull is more commonly found in Argentina and Chile but has been photographed on the Cashen Estuary recently by Seamus Enright. The bird was named after the Arctic explorer Sir John Franklin, who first discovered the bird during an expedition in 1823.
