It’s been proposed to rezone land owned by a GAA club outside Killarney.
Members of the Killarney Municipal District discussed the draft Local Area Plan for 2018-2024, which included the proposed rezoning of land in the area, excluding lands within the Killarney town boundary.
Local area plans provide the overall framework for the development of a region.
In relation to the Killarney MD plan, 41 submissions were received during the public consultation period.
Fossa GAA, which owns a 5.2-acre site in Gortroe, requested its property be rezoned from agricultural to mixed use/residential development.
Kerry County Council initially refused the request as it’s an objective of theirs to ensure all new development is located within the town boundary in order to promote a compact urban form.
However, Councillor Brendan Cronin proposed rezoning to C6, which means a number of services can be constructed such as offices, light industry, wholesale warehouses and residential units-all subject to planning.
The Independent councillor claimed planning permission for a hotel had previously been granted for lands, and the area is within a reduced speed limit section.
All councillors present supported the rezoning of the land to mixed use/residential.
The proposed change will now to through a 4-week period of public consultation.
