President Michael D Higgins has received a warm welcome at IT Tralee as he launched the body’s UNESCO chair in physical education, sports, recreation and fitness. Up to a dozen uniformed gardai as well as private security guards were at the college’s North Campus in advance of the President’s arrival. Last month, the President was verbally abused by a number of anti-water charge protesters when he visited a school in Dublin. However, there have been no protests at IT Tralee. President Higgins is launching the IT’s UNESCO chair in physical education, sports, recreation and fitness. IT Tralee is the first third level institution in the world to receive this designation which means it is a site of expertise to help people with disabilities transform their lives through physical education, sports and fitness.
