The Killarney Municipal District has heard over a million euro would be required for works to alleviate flooding. A deputation of residents of Whitebridge, Killarney addressed councillors about issues affecting them. Hillary and Moira Fleming of Fleming’s Whitebridge Caravan and Camping Park in Ballycasheen, Killarney told the meeting that they had carried out embankment works in the 1980s following bad flooding in the area. They say those works were effective and it was not until a bridge was constructed in the area by the OPW in 2003 when flooding began to reoccur. The meeting heard the OPW estimates that 1.4 million euro would be needed for remedial works. Council management said the OPW CFRAM flooding study would be published in June with public consultation in July and that 1.4 million euro would be outside the financial scope of the local authority. It added the matter was one for Cabinet and that there are around 300 of these schemes nationally. Councillors offered their support to the Whitebridge residents saying the flooding had been devastating for their home and business.
