Over 2,500 houses were completed in the county last year according to figures released by the Minister for Housing and Urban Renewal Noel Ahern. In total almost 70,000 houses were built in the country making it the 9th record year for housing. The number of houses been built has trebled since 1993 and has doubled since 1996. Cork had the highest number of housing completions in the country with over 6,000 been built in 2003. South Tipperary had the lowest with just under 650 houses last year. One off housing now accounts for 60 per cent of new homes in rural housing. According to Minister Ahern the record breaking output is proof that the various government measures to boost the supply of housing have been successful and will continue to do so.
