The Ombudsman says the Department of Agriculture may be wrongly pursing other farmers for repayment of grants it had awarded to them. ombudsmanPeter Tyndall was referring to the case of a Kerry farmer who had ‘unjustly’ been pursued by the Department for repayment of €25,000 he had been granted under its Afforestation Scheme. The farmer had applied for the grant in 2004 and planted his land but his forestry was destroyed by flooding in 2009. Mr Tyndall says it is not unusual for Government departments to have wrongly reclaimed premiums in the recession and injustices were perpetrated as a result. He says while the Kerry case was not widespread, neither was it a ‘one-off’. [audio_player src=””]
