The Office of Public Works received a total of 22 applications for boat permits to bring people to the Skelligs.

The competition for eleven permits was first announced with a closing date of February 10th, but this was extended to March 31st for thirteen permits.

The OPW says it hopes to finalise the appointment of the permits before the end of this month.

Two were granted last year – plus the thirteen granted ahead of this year’s season – will bring the total number of permits to 15.

Each boat may carry a maximum of twelve visitors per day to the Islands – assuming a full complement of 15 boats, this equates to a maximum of 180 visitors per day, weather permitting.
