Number of Kerry County Councillors to increase to 33 from 27

The number of county councillors in Kerry looks set to increase. The report of the Local Electoral Area Boundary Committee is recommending that the number of Kerry County Councillors be increased from 27 to 33. Environment Minister Phil Hogan who set up the review says he has accepted the committee’s findings and will be  giving effect to them. Phil Hogan, Minister for Environment, Community and Local GovernmentUp to now, Kerry County Council has had 27 councillors – five each representing the Killorglin and Listowel electoral areas, seven representing Killarney and Tralee electoral areas and three for the Dingle area. The report by the Local Electoral Area Boundary Committee has just been available online since 5 pm and has been slow to download due to its size and the great interest in its findings. Therefore this initial reading shows the following changes that will be made. The redrawing of these boundaries by the Boundary Committee means Dingle Electoral Area is no more. The west will now form part of a new electoral area called South and West Kerry which will include the old Killorglin area. This new district will be represented by nine councillors. Changes to Listowel Electoral Area means this district will have seven councillors; Killarney is to have eight and Tralee nine.
