Listowel’s William Street is “a complete embarrassment” in its current state.
That’s according to Councillor Mike Kennelly who tabled an emergency motion at the monthly meeting of the Listowel Municipal District after a woman, following a funeral, reportedly fell there last Thursday.
The Fine Gael Councillor tabled the emergency motion as he said he’d witnessed the woman falling on the street last Thursday as she followed a funeral procession.
Cllr Kennelly said the woman had reportedly received medical treatment afterwards.
He sought a start and finish date for works on the street, talks of which he said had been “going on for two years” with Listowel now “facing into a third races and a Fleadh” without any real progress. .
He said he was “embarrassed” and that the road was of a “third world” standard.
Cllr Kennelly said he was concerned the state of the road could lead to more serious accidents and ultimately claims.
Senior Engineer John Sheehan advised initial gas and main works were to be undertaken.
The meeting also heard surfacing works are to begin there in late September, with a view to completion in early December.
