« BackUS astronaut traces Kerry roots

The first US female astronaut to walk in space is on a visit to Kerry this week.

Relative Space...Dr Kathryn Sullivan,(right) the first American Female Astronaut to walk in space, visiting her relations, Nora, left and Kathleen O’Sullivan, at their home in Lauragh on the Beara Peninsula, Co Kerry. Her Grandfather Denis ‘Lea’ O’Sullivan from Upper Lauragh, Co Kerry emigrated to New York in 1893 and eventually settled in California. This is her second visit to the homestead. Dr Kathy Sullivan toured Kenmare, Tralee and Dingle and visited her second cousins Margaret and Nora O’Sullivan in Lauragh in Tuosist.
Dr Sullivan’s grandfather emigrated to New York in the 1890s and the family later settled near Los Angeles.
She travelled to space on three missions and is now US Chief Scientist and Under Secretary at the US Department of Commerce.
