Two Kerry TDs have implored the Minister for Health, Simon Harris, to address the waiting lists for cataract operations.
Deputy Martin Ferris says he was contacted by an 84-year-old woman who is facing a two-year wait to correct her eyesight.
Meanwhile, Deputy Healy-Rae claims he has evidence of people going blind while waiting for a cataract operation.
Sinn Fein TD Martin Ferris says he was contacted by a woman who is waiting over eighteen months for a routine eye operation, and has been told she’ll have to wait a further six months at least. Deputy Ferris says the woman, who is living alone, finds it very difficult to carry out even the most basic chores due to her eyesight being so poor. He adds the problem will not be solved with funding alone.
Meanwhile, TD Michael Healy-Rae says he brought the issue to light in the Dail, claiming he has evidence of people going blind while waiting for a cataract operation. Minister for Health, Simon Harris, says there are nearly 3,000 people on the waiting list in the South/South West Hospital Group alone, which includes the county of Kerry. Deputy Michael Healy-Rae says this is an absolute scandal and it should never happen in a modern society.
