« BackTralee Solicitor says legal aid rates paid to solicitors should be increased

justiceA Tralee solicitor says the legal aid system in Ireland does not need reform but rates paid to solicitors should be increased.

Pat Mann says if a solicitor doesn’t have a large volume of legal aid cases it doesn’t pay them to take them on.

Figures from the Department of Justice show that in 2013 – there were 610 applications granted for criminal and civil legal aid in Kerry.

This was an increase from 546 in 2009.

Mr Mann says the rates paid don’t match the work that’s put in and it is too simplistic to rail against the legal aid system:
