Tralee has the highest vacancy rate of all non-holiday homes in urban centres.
The Heritage Council says Census 2016 reveals there are over 10,000 such buildings in 17 large towns across the country.
It shows there are 820 vacant non-holiday homes in Tralee; that’s 24.5% of all non-holiday homes in these urban centres.
Killarney has 518 vacant non-holiday homes; 12% of the total.
The Heritage Council believes a tax incentive scheme, modelled on the Living City initiative, could conserve and revitalise these large towns and provide over 10,000 badly needed homes.
