Councillors have called for the former Dennys’ site in Tralee to be given priority by the local authority.

The issue was raised by Councillor Norma Foley at the monthly meeting of the Tralee Municipal District saying the site has mass potential and needs to be given priority.

Council management told the meeting they are currently examining the planning requirements and other legal issues in relation to the demolition and disposal of material from the site.

Once planning approval is received, they hope to tender for the works.

Cllr Toireasa Ferris said the plan for the 2.5 acre site, which was donated to the town by Kerry Group in February last year, needs to benefit the townspeople as a whole.

That was echoed by Cllr Pa Daly who said the site could become like an unwanted Christmas present.

Cllr Pat McCarthy said a public private partnership should be explored.

Councillor Norma Foley also said we need to reimagine the huge potential of The Square.

Cllr Foley called for a root and branch look at the area in Tralee town centre to see what potential it has going forward.

She asked for a response from the council on the matter in the next meeting in September.

Cllr Toireasa Ferris suggested that a glass roof or tarpaulin cover over the area  that could be retracted in good weather.
