The chairman of the Kerry branch of the Irish Farmers’ Association has appealed to farmers to renew safety checks on their farms.
Seán Brosnan says there aren’t enough farm safety inspectors in the county so it’s up to the farming community to ensure their farm is a safe place to work.
He also offered his sympathy to the family of Sean O’Sullivan from Dromid who was killed in a fall from a tractor at Gortatlea, Mastergeehy on Saturday evening. It’s understood the 57-year-old, married father was standing on the hitch of a trailer when he fell to his death. His body was taken to Kerry General Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Mr Brosnan said it’s the second farm-related accident in Kerry so far this year:
The Health and Safety Authority is not investigating the accident as it occurred on a public road and not a workplace.
Meanwhile, Parish Priest of Waterville Fr Gerard Finucane, who attended the scene, says the whole community is “distraught” at the tragedy.
