Aileen Crean-O’Brien embarked on the expedition last month, 100 years after her grandfather arrived on the shores of South Georgia to complete the famous Antartic Endurance expedition.

Aileen grew up in Tralee and now runs a restaurant in Kenmare.

The team were on their way to the Crean Glacier when the incident occurred.

Aileen sustained a shattered knee and ankle, and a fractured lower leg.

Updates from the team’s Facebook page say that Aileen was transferred to the care of the Royal Navy patrol ship the HMS Clyde at Grytviken a settlement on the island of South Georgia.

The rest of the team including her two sons and partner are continuing the expedition.
