Tom Crean’s granddaughter has suffered a leg break during an expedition to retrace the steps of her famous grandfather.
Aileen Crean-O’Brien embarked on the expedition last month, 100 years after her grandfather arrived on the shores of South Georgia to complete the famous Endurance expedition.
Aileen grew up in Tralee and now runs a restaurant in Kenmare.
The team were on their way to the Crean Glacier when the incident occurred.
Aileen sustained a shattered knee and ankle, and a fractured lower leg.
Updates from the team’s Facebook page say that a gale is halting progress for Aileen to sail back to the Falklands and they will have to wait until Monday.
Tom Crean served on three expeditions to the Antarctic and was a major figure on Ernest Shackleton’s Endurance expedition.
