Thieves are targeting graves in Rath cemetery in Tralee.
Sinn Féin Cllr Toireasa Ferris says memorials have been stolen from graves, and in some cases have been noticed on other graves within the burial ground.
She raised the issue at the recent meeting of Tralee Municipal District.
Cllr Toireasa Ferris says people have approached her saying memorials have been stolen off loved ones’ graves, and in some instances the same items were noticed on other graves within the cemetery.
She said there’s nothing more heart-breaking than to see a loved one’s grave vandalised or items going missing from it.
Kerry County Council says it has a full time caretaker there during working hours, but says the theft of items from graves should be reported to Gardaí.
Meanwhile Kerry County Council is to look at providing another entrance from the Rathass side of the cemetery.
It’s after Fianna Fáil Cllr Norma Foley raised the issue at the council, saying she’s gotten a lot of representations from people with mobility issues, who can’t access the part of the cemetery that’s been significantly developed in recent years.
