A leading commentator says he believes there will be limited economic benefit from the filming of Star Wars on Skellig Michael.
Fintan O’Toole, a columnist with the Irish Times, has also questioned the legal basis of the Naval Service being deployed to operate an exclusion zone around the island during filming last year. He says the Defence Forces should not have been deployed to protect the interests of a private company and accused the Government of ‘fawning over’ Disney Lucas Film. Speculation is mounting that filming has already been taking place on Skellig Michael this year with reports that a crew is likely to return to the UNESCO World Heritage site again later this month.
