Staff at the Institute of Technology Tralee will go on strike next month unless the Government engages in meaningful discussions with its main union.
Nationally, 92 percent of members of the Teachers’ Union of Ireland have voted in favour of strike action on February 3rd over cutbacks.
The TUI says that since 2008, funding cuts of up to 38 percent have been imposed at IT Tralee despite an increase of 30 percent in student numbers.
In that period, staff numbers have also decreased by 30. There is currently 190 academic staff at IT Tralee.
Assistant General Secretary of the TUI, Aidan Kenny, says the higher education sector and particularly the Institutes of Technology have been disproportionally affected by excessive cuts.
