Rural post offices should have protected status according to a Kerry County Councillor.
Councillor Patrick Connor-Scarteen was speaking after a meeting, organised by Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae, with An Post’s Public Affairs Manager, Angus Laverty.
Representatives from Sneem, Lauragh, Kenmare and Kilgarvan Post Offices were in attendance, along with local politicians, to discuss An Post’s plans to centralise mail sorting in the area.
An Post says they will locate a central mail sorting unit in Kenmare or Kilgarvan, however, should this not be possible, they will consider Glenfesk or Killarney.
They also flatly refuse the option of leaving the post offices alone, saying it would not, and could not, happen.
Councillor Connor-Scarteen says rural post offices should be given special protected status, similar to that granted to isolated schools.
