Social media has helped to decipher the handwriting of Daniel O’Connell in a letter written to his wife on the day Catholic Emancipation was legislated for.
Four staff in Marsh’s Library in Dublin who have specialist historical experience failed to decode the handwriting and the library took to social media for the help of the general public.
The original post was seen by over 23,000 people on Facebook and over 100,000 viewed the tweet.
Its full text has now been put together with the help of members of the public.
Dr Jason McElligott of Marsh’s Library says the Liberator’s handwriting was appalling and hard to read.
