A plan to bring a liquefied natural gas terminal to north Kerry, which has been beset by delays, has received a boost.
The Shannon LNG project planned for the Tarbert-Ballylongford landbank has been named as a key supply point for the EU in a new Security of Gas Supply Package unveiled by the EU Commission.
MEP for Ireland South Sean Kelly has described the announcement as extremely positive in a critical time for European energy policy focused on diversity and security of supply.
Mr Kelly says everything must be done to deliver the multi-million euro project.
The EU wants each member state to have access to three different sources of gas.
However, it has been reported that the parent company Hess Corporation has pulled out of the Shannon LNG project to focus on fracking elsewhere.
