A major search off the coast of Cork – following a mystery distress call from a yacht – has been stood down.
The yacht’s three-man crew said they had engine problems and were sinking – however emergency services have been unable to find it.
The call, picked up by the Valentia Coastguard, came on the distress channel and claimed the yacht was one mile South off Roches Point at the entrance to Cork Harbour.
But there was no sign of the boat in that location
Two helicopters, three coastguard units, three lifeboats and Irish naval vessels were all involved in the search.
It’s unclear if the distress call was genuine or a hoax.
Valentia Coastguard confirmed to Radio Kerry News that the search has – for the moment – been stood down.
