The Seanad has heard how an elderly Kerryman is so afraid of being burgled that he takes a shotgun to bed with him every night.
Senator Marie Moloney said she spoke to the 69-year-old man whose experience, she said, reflects the genuine fears of people, particularly older people.
Labour Senator Marie Moloney said that one could almost taste the fear in people when they spoke of crime.
The Kilcummin politician asked that the Government provide grant aid towards installing security alarms.
However, Junior Minister Jimmy Deenihan, speaking on behalf of the Minister for Justice, said Minister Frances Fitzgerald is of the view that such a grant scheme would not be the best use of resources.
He said Minister Fitzgerald had announced a doubling in funding for the community alert and Crimestoppers schemes.
Senator Moloney told the Seanad that she met an elderly North Kerryman who told her of his fears of being burgled.
