The Kerry politician, who’s the general secretary of the body that represents county councillors, is welcoming Minister Leo Varadkar’s decision to change their class of PRSI.
It means councillors can now secure the same entitlements as the self employed.
Fine Gael Cllr Bobby O’Connell who is general secretary of LAMA, the Local Authorities Members’ Association, says the role of a councillor has become more like a full time job despite a salary of 16,000 euro.
Cllr O’Connell knows of one Cork councillor who left the job and joined the Gardaí because of the financial situation.
