The President of the Students’ Union at the Institute of Technology Tralee believes that increasing employer PRSI could help cover the cost of third level education.
A report by an expert group on funding the third level sector says an extra one billion euro will be needed to cater for increase demand for places.
Three options have been outlined in the report.
These include a student loan scheme which would see students gradually pay back the cost of third level education when they reach a certain wage threshold after entering the workforce.
Another would see registration fees continue at 3,000 euro for students with the State covering the rest of the cost.
Finally would be a system funded by the State including the abolition of the student’s contribution.
