The population decrease in Cahersiveen is a cause for concern according to local development company, ACARD.

Frank Curran of the Cahersiveen Community Development Company says there are very few young people in the area, and in the past, it was those who kept the area economically alive.

Census 2016 results show a population decrease of 9.3%, or 188 people, in Cahersiveen.

However, Mr Curran says, despite the depopulation in the area, there are plans in place which will help to reignite the community such as the construction of a planetarium and the reopening of the Watermarque Hotel.

He adds the proposed greenway for the area could also have a significant positive impact on the locality, pointing to the success of a similar project in Westport.
