There are plans to develop an urban beach in Tralee, which could create employment and make the town an adventure tourism destination.

Michaela and John Edwards, who run an adventure activity business, made a presentation to Tralee Municipal District councillors, saying such a facility at the canal could strive for Blue Flag status.

They claim it would fill beds in Tralee and extend the season, it would result in empty units at the canal being occupied, and would be a location for environmental education.

€20,000 is needed initially to fix the lock gates on the canal, and Cllr Toireasa Ferris, who previously discussed such an idea with the council’s forward planning unit, says this is a small amount of money for such potential:
