Plans for a new school building to serve Irish-speaking students in Tralee and North Kerry have taken a major step forward.

Gaelcholáiste Chiarraí crestKerry Education and Training Board has signed a contract today which sees a Kerry County Council site at Hawley Park, Tralee come under its control.

The new Gaelcholáiste Chiarraí school building will be built on this site – the target date for construction is next year.

It’s the only second level all-Irish school in the county, outside of the Dingle Gaeltacht.

The school, which is currently based in Moyderwell, has 326 students and this number is projected to grow.

CEO of Kerry ETB, Colm McEvoy, thanked Kerry County Council for transferring the site.

He also praised his organisation’s education officer, Ann O’Dwyer for her work.
