The Passport Office is dealing with over 53,000 applications.
Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Charles Flanagan revealed the figures in response to a question by Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae.
Minister Flanagan says the Passport Office has seen an 11% increase in the number of applications in the year-to-date.
He adds, in response to the seasonal spike in demand, a total of 233 temporary clerical officers have been recruited so far this year, an increase of 62 on last year.
Deputy Healy-Rae commended the Trojan work of those in the Passport Office who are dealing with the major backlogs.
