The OPW says safety requirements are set out by law but it also applies its own rules to boatmen issued with permits.

As well as carrying onboard the necessary lifejackets required, permit holders on the Skellig route will be required to carry personal flotation devices (PFD) for each passenger.

The OPW says passengers and will be required to wear the PFDs for the duration of their trip to and from the island.

The OPW issued the statement following safety concerns raised by a British tourist who visited the UNESCO heritage site recently.
