One third of drink drivers arrested in Kerry in the first six months of this year were aged under 30.
Chief Superintendent Dave Sheahan told a meeting of the county’s Joint Policing Committee at Aras an Chontae the findings were “staggering”
The statistics related to the first six months of 2016 compared to the same period last year.
This year 151 motorists were arrested in the county by Gardai while intoxicated; that’s compared to 134 people in the same period in 2015.
134 out of the 151 drivers arrested this year were male; nine were aged under 20 and 46 were between 21 and 30 years old.
5 women in that age group were arrested.
Chief Superintendent Dave Sheahan told the meeting it is a disappointing figure and as a result Gardai in the county will be carrying out targeted operations on drink driving in the coming weeks:
