Elderly people in rural areas are being forced to flee their homes because of nuisance callers, a community activist has claimed.
Tadhg McCarthy, who is chairman of the Sneem Community Alert, says many people in the South Kerry area are being targeted three or four times a week.
He says the situation has become so bad, some elderly people have left their homes and gone into nursing homes.
Mr McCarthy says the calls usually happen in the middle of the day and the problem has got worse with cutbacks and the closure of rural garda stations.
He’s calling for more resources to be given to the gardaí to patrol rural areas.
