« BackNorth Kerry man denied being drunk and aggressive with gardaí

Listowel CourthouseA north Kerry man who became aggressive with gardaí following a day at the Listowel Races has been told by a district court judge that he is his own worst enemy.

Denis Meehan of 13 Woodgrove, Moyvane denied being abusive or intoxicated when he was arrested at The Square, Listowel on September 20th, 2014.

Listowel District Court was told two gardaí were assisting a woman at The Square, Listowel on the night in question when they were approached by Denis Meehan.

He began shouting at the gardaí, telling them to leave the woman alone and he became very aggressive.

Mr Meehan refused to give his name and was unsteady on his feet.

Gardaí formed the opinion that he was a danger to himself and others and arrested him at 12.30am.

In evidence, Denis Meehan said he had been drinking after the races but denied he was drunk. He said gardaí were very rough with him and he gave his name in Irish when asked for it.

Judge James O’Connor noted that the accused had 11 previous convictions but the last public order offence dated to ten years previously.

He told Mr Meehan he was own worst enemy and he dismissed the case.
