« BackNew Chair for IT Tralee to be appointed in September

ITTThe Institute of Technology of Tralee expects to appoint a new Chairperson in the coming months.

The role has been held by a Kerry County Councillor in an acting capacity in recent years.

It is three years since the former Chairman of Governing Body of the Institute of Technology, Tralee retired.

Flan Garvey, who is from Clare, was appointed to the role in 2001 by then Education Minister Noel Dempsey.

He stepped aside in December 2012 following an allegation of plagiarism in his Master’s degree but later briefly returned to the role before deciding to retire.

The investigation concluded the thesis was plagiarised, but the plagiarism was unintentional.

There was also controversy about nearly 126,000 euro in expenses claimed by Mr Garvey between 2005 and 2011.

Mr Garvey said he was entitled to these expenses which involved travel from Clare.

Labour Cllr Terry O’Brien has held the role of acting chair for the past number of years.

The vacancy was recently advertised through the Public Appointments Service and IT Tralee says it expects to appoint a new Chair in September.
