The mother of a 16-year-old boy says there should be alternatives for students who miss state examinations.
The woman, who prefers not to be named, was speaking after her son missed a Junior Certificate exam as a result of an alleged assault at a North Kerry school.
While her son was in hospital, the mother contacted the Department of Education which informed her there were no options in place to resit the exam.
Gardaí are investigating the incident and are currently not appealing for witnesses, while the school in question is not commenting at this stage.
The State Examination Commission says, while it cannot comment on individual cases, for the most part, there are no facilities to repeat missed state exams.
