Minister Leo Varadkar is abolishing the fee to register a stillbirth after a Kerry TD highlighted the issue as “grossly insensitive”.
The Minister for Social Protection is removing the €20 fee to collect a birth certificate for a stillborn child.
Minister Varadkar said the issue was highlighted to him by Kerry Fine Gael Deputy Brendan Griffin who became aware of the charge when collecting his son’s birth cert.
Parents were only given the mechanism to register a still born baby in 1995 with 240 certificates registered in 2014.
Deputy Griffin said Minister Varadkar is also set to examine other areas of insensitivity when it comes to birth registrations.
