Rebranding Kerry General Hospital as University Hospital Kerry will help attract more fulltime consultants to the facility.
That’s the view of Health Minister Leo Varadkar who visited the hospital today to officially rename it along with viewing the new day care centre for patients with diabetes, CT scanner and education centre.
The new title is part of plans to reform the health service by creating hospital groups.
University Hospital Kerry is part of the South/South West Hospital Group and is affiliated with UCC.
Although he couldn’t say how much the rebranding would cost, Minister Varadkar says it is being done to benefit the hospital:
Meanwhile, Kerry Sinn Fein TD Martin Ferris has launched a blistering attack on Fine Gael’s legacy in health which he says is a litany of broken promises.
Deputy Ferris says there’s chaos in emergency departments, people waiting on hospital trolleys for days and endless waiting lists.
He says promises for universal health insurance and free GP care are gone and that patient care will be a key priority for Sinn Fein.
