One of Ireland’s most legendary sports figures has been laid to rest.
The funeral mass of Mick ‘the Iron Man’ Murphy took place in O’Connell Memorial Church in Cahersiveen this morning. Fr Larry Kelly was the celebrant in the packed church where friends and admirers gathered to pay their respects to the remarkable man from Súgréine, Cahersiveen. Friend Pat Golden paid tribute to Mick who was known as ‘the Iron Man’ following his 1958 win in the Rás Tailteann cycling stage race. He was also a wrestler, boxer, runner, farmer, bricklayer, ventriloquist and circus performer.
Radio Kerry broadcaster Weeshie Fogarty was at Mick Murphy’s funeral.
