« BackMEP criticises EU for dropping scheme to reduce serious injuries on roads

An Ireland South MEP has criticised the European Commission for dropping a long-promised EU strategic target scheme aimed at reducing the number of serious road injuries.

Over 200,000 people suffered life-changing injuries in road collisions last year; an increase of 3% since 2013.

The Road Safety Authority says there was a 59% jump in the number of cyclists injured on Irish roads in 2012, most of whom were not wearing helmets.

Fine Gael MEP Deirdre Clune wants a specific scheme aimed at reducing such injuries and another to subsidise the cost of cycling helmets.
