The death has taken place of Mary Keane, widow of the late Listowel playwright and author, John B Keane.
A native of Knocknagoshel, Mrs Keane, who was 86, had been ill for some months.
Mrs Keane will repose at O’Carroll’s Funeral Home tomorrow from 4pm with removal at 7pm to St Mary’s Church, Listowel.
Mary Keane was born Mary O’Connor, and grew up in Ahaneboy, Knocknagoshel, the second youngest of five children.
She met her future husband, John B Keane, at a dance at Listowel Races in 1949.
The pair married in 1955 and bought a pub on William Street, Listowel, the same year.
Throughout his long career as one of the country’s leading playwrights, the late John B, who died in 2002, credited much of his success to the encouragement and support of his wife.
The Keanes had three sons; Billy, Conor and John, and a daughter, Johanna.
Last February, Mrs Keane and her family celebrated the 60th anniversary of the opening of their famous pub, where she regularly worked behind the bar, up to her recent illness.
She is survived by her four children and 13 grandchildren.
