The OPW says a new supervisory post of foreman has been approved.

However secretary of Fundúireacht an Bhlascaoid, Lorcán Ó Cinnéide, says the appointment of a manager is vital to the Blasket Island project.

Mícheál de Mórdha officially retires as manager of Ionad an Bhlascaoid Mhóir on August 6th, but will not be replaced at this time.

The interpretative and cultural centre is said to attract up to 50,000 visitors each year.

The OPW says its public service numbers have reduced by over 20 per cent in recent years.

A spokesperson said the position of manager would be considered in the context of the OPW’s overall workforce planning and any posts sanctioned via that process are filled in line with public service recruitment practices.

The spokesperson added the appointment of a new supervisory post of foreman would ensure the continuation of daily operational services.

But Fundúireacht an Bhlascaoid says it’s hopeful a new manager will be appointed.
