« BackMan jailed for thefts from cars in Killarney area

A Mayo man, arrested by gardai for breaking into cars at Killarney tourist spots and stealing property, has been jailed for seven months by the district court.

22 year-old Thomas McDonagh of The Maples, Ballyhaunis, Co. Mayo pleaded guilty to the offences when he appeared before Killarney District Court. The incidents took place at the car parks of Torc Waterfall, Muckross Rowing Club, at Derrycunnihy and Dinis Cottage on June 29th, 2013. Thousands of euro worth of damage was done to cars, there was distress and loss of property for the victims and full compensation had not been paid over, the court was told. Mr McDonagh pleaded guilty to breaking a car lock at Muckross Rowing Club and stealing a credit card holder and cards; to breaking the door lock of another vehicle at Dinis Cottage car park and taking a handbag and €165 in cash; and to taking a handbag, mobile phone and cash from another vehicle at the car park at Torc Waterfall. He also pleaded guilty to breaking damaging the lock and door of a fourth vehicle, this time at Derrycunnihy, further along the Kenmare road and on the same date. Inspector John Brennan told Judge James O’Connor that full compensation had not been forthcoming. Judge O’Connor imposed prison sentences totalling seven months.
